    Lt. Col. John B. England entered Cadet Training in 1942, received his commission and wings less than a year later. Assigned to the Eighth Air Force in Europe in 1943. He quickly became known as one of America's foremost Air Aces by shooting down 18 enemy A/C in 108 Combat Missions, as a P-51 Pilot assigned to the 357 Fighter Group. In 1944 he was promoted to Major and was only 21 at the time. He was decorated with the Silver Star for destroying 4 enemy A/C on one mission. The Distinguished Flying Cross with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. The Air Medal, with 14 clusters, and the Croix de Guerre of France. He also served as Commander of the Fighter Weapons Instructors School at Nellis AFB. He also served in Korea and obtained vital information concerning Fighter Interceptor Problems there confronting the Staff of the Air Force. He was widely known throughout the Air Force for his knowledge of Fighter Air Craft Tactics, Employment and Programming. He designed the Program for the 6 months TDY rotating Squadrons for Europe. Lt. Col. England's 389th FBS left for France in Oct. 1954. He died in a crash of his Jet Air Craft in Nov. 1954. He was an Outstanding Commander and leader of his Men. Alexandria AFB was officially named England AFB on 1 May 1955.
