A graduate of the College of Engineering of the University of Michigan with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, John C. DeBoer joined the Grumman Corporation, Bethpage, New York, where he was responsible for the flight testing instrumentation of prototype aircraft. When the twin-engine Grumman F7F Tigercat night fighter experienced structural damage during carrier landings, DeBoer designed and produced a cinematography device for photographing the airplane during landings, recording vertical, horizontal and rotational velocity. The device was successfully deployed for tests aboard the carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt in the fall of 1946.
