    Honored by:

Chief Warrant Officer (CW3) John D. Johns
    Awarded: Distinguished Flying Cross .
    Date Actions: 15 September 1968
    Theater: Republic of Vietnam
Reason: For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Chief Warrant Officer Johns distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a helicopter engaged in extracting and relocating elements of the 25th Infantry Division. Despite poor weather, the absence of gunship support and enemy ground fire, he extracted all elements from a fire support base and relocated them in a total of six sorties. As darkness approached and visibility dropped, the need for ammunition and supplies at the new location became critical. In spite of poor weather and constant enemy harassment, Chief Warrant Officer Johns completed a total of sixteen sorties. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
