    John Kendrick Buckner received a Bachelor of Arts degree from DePauw University in Mathematics in 1958. In 1960 he received a Master of Science - Aeronautical Engineering degree from Stanford University. He worked on the
    advanced design and development programs for the ATF/YF-22, ATA/A-12, National Aerospace Plane, Japanese FS-X, Taiwan IDF, and Special Projects.

    He worked on aerodynamic design of high performance military aircraft, including the YF-16/F-l 6, and the F-111 (first operational variable-swept wing aircraft). He worked on full scale development of the first operational fly-by-wire flight control system including unique departure prevention and anti-spin control laws, and the first operational side-stick controller in a fighter.

    He served with committees of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) beginning in 1978. He was on the Aircraft Design and Technical Committee (1987-94) and chairman from 1990-92; Public Policy Committee 1987 to present, and chairman of the Defense Subcommittee; and, he served on the Flight Mechanics Technical Committee from 1978 to 1981.

    From 1988 to 1992 he served with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Aerospace Research and Technology Subcommittee (ARTS) of the Aeronautics Advisory Committee (AAC).

    He served on the National Research Council, Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board, from 1992 to 1996.
