Learned to fly in 1936 at age 18. Trained naval pilots for duration of World War II (WWII) with postwar service as personal pilot of Admiral Tip Merrill. He left the Navy as a Lieutenant and went on to fly his own planes for many years. His son is now getting his pilot's license.
