    2nd Lt graduated Marianna, FL March 1944.

    Sent to Goxhill, England June 1944 for P-51 training. Went to France September 1944 and assigned to 354th Fighter Group. Shot down in dogfight by BF-109 October 1944. Slightly wounded but bailed out near Karlsruh and taken prisoner.

    Permanent camp Stalag Luft III at Sagan. In January 1945 walked and rode train to camp at Nuremburg after Stalag III in danger of being overrun by Russians. In April 1945 walked to Mossburg in Bavaria to avoid US invasion troops. Liberated in May 1945 and returned to US.

    Discharged October 1945.

    John Bowers retired from Peninsular Corporation in Detroit where he served for 30 years as a plant manager.

    Died 11 November 1989.
