    John W. O'Neill served in the U.S. Air force from 1952 to 1956 and flew the F-86D in the Fifth, 325th and 456th FIS of the Air Defense Command. He subsequently had a 34 year career with NASA in the Nation's Human Space Flight programs. He was in charge of flight planning in the Apollo Program and rose to the position of Director of Mission Operations responsible for mission planning, astronaut training and mission control at NASA Johnson Space Center.
