    Lieutenant Commander Joseph Bryan, III served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the aircraft carrier the USS Lexington (CV-16) in the Pacific Theater as a public affairs officer. After his Navy service he was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, later retiring as a colonel. Earlier, based on participation in the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Princeton University, he had been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army making him one of the few men to have held commissions in three services.

    he was a prolific writer and wrote an account of his experiences in the Pacific during the war. Three of his books include "Aircraft Carrier," "Mission beyond Darkness," and "The Sword over the Mantel."
