    Honored by:

    1st Lieutenant McElvain trained as an Air Corps B-17 pilot in the closing months of WWII and qualified as aircraft commander in 1945. After the war and completing his college education, he joined the Minnesota Air National Guard as a P-51 pilot. In early 1952 he volunteered for jet pilot training and was assigned to Nellis Air Force Base. From April of that year he flew 63 F-86 Sabre Jet combat missions from Kimpo Air Base in South Korea over Mig Alley, assigned to the 51st Fighter Interceptor Squadron. On November 7th, 1952, he perished in a non-combat accident returning to base from a combat mission over North Korea.
