Sgt. Matesic was drafted on 21 Sept. 1942 during WWII. He was a medical technician assigned to the European Theatre during the Battles of Northern France and Rhineland. Sgt Matesic was captured by the Germans and kept as a POW in Stalag 3C around 9/15/1944. He escaped the Stalag and traveled by foot through Austria, Hungary and Croatia to the coast where he somehow made it back to the Army. It is unknown how he returned. Sgt. Matesic was held in Stalag 3C, Alt-Drewitz, Brandenburg, Prussia 52-14. He separated honorably from the 318th Infantry Medical detachment on 8 Oct. 1945. He served nobly to protect our freedom. He was a lifelong admirer of aviation.
