Kitty, born in Missouri in 1922, began her life-long love of flying with her first airplane ride at the age of 5 in her father’s Eagle Rock biplane. Even at that young age, Kitty realized how fortunate she was to be able to be around her father and other pilots in the early days of general aviation, and she loved listening to their “airplane talk.” She always knew she wanted to be a pilot. Later she studied home economics at Iowa State University and became interested in chemistry after meeting her future husband, Clifford Hach. Kitty and Cliff co-founded the Hach Chemical Company in 1947 in Ames, Iowa. Kitty was essential to the company’s expansion, flying her own plane to small airfields around the country to sell water testing kits. After Cliff passed away, she became president, Chief Operating Officer, and CEO of the company. She was also the first woman director of the American Water Works Association, an international non-profit working for better water quality. Over the years Kitty owned and flew twenty five airplanes from a Cessna 140 to Beechcraft King Airs to a Cessna Citation. Kitty competed multiple times in women’s air races including one time in the Powder Puff Derby, an annual transcontinental air race for women pilots. Also, she was a long time member of the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of women pilots. To Kitty aviation was everything – it was fun, it was exciting, and it was remarkable evidence of the progress of our country. In her lifetime Kitty has received numerous awards and honors for her philanthropic work as well as entrepreneurship.
