    Wall of Honor Level:
    Air and Space Sponsor

    Honored by:
    Mr. Daniel J. Roam

In 1978, Kay Roam asked for flying lessons as a birthday present. She was 40 years old. In May, 1979 she soloed at Billings, MT Logan International Airport.
She fell in love with flying and decided to become an air traffic controller. In 1980, she graduated from the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, and returned as Billing’s first woman FSS specialist.
She joined the Ninety-Nines and Civil Air Patrol and in 1985 transferred back to OKC as a flight service instructor. There, she earned her Commercial, Instrument, CFI and CFII ratings, as well as served as CAP Mission Search Pilot, Check Pilot, Wing Director of Operations and Safety Officer.
In 1989, Kay transferred to the Prescott, AZ FSS and purchased her own 1969 C-172, nick-named “Red Roamer”. In 1990 she assisted in planning the first “Women in Aviation” conference, which over the next 13 years grew from 150 to over 3,000 participants.
Kay retired from the FSS and solo flight in 2001. During her 20 years of active flying, Kay accumulated over 2,000 accident-free hours, made the best friends of her life, and experienced the great joys known only to those who take their dreams with them into the skies.
Her three sons, Mike, Karl and Dan salute her. She will always be their inspiration.
