On 29 November 1968 he was a member of a CH-54 Crew which was assigned the mission of extracting five sorties of 155 howitzers and five sorties of ammunition from a fire base near Ben Sue. Upon approaching the fire base the first time the crew was: informed that the fire base was under heavy sniper and mortar fire. Despite the hazards of the intense fire upon the fire base, the crew chose to continue the mission. Upon each approach into the fire base the aircraft increases heavy enemy fire, sustaining numerous hits. During each extraction from the fire base he performed his duties in an outstanding manner thus contributing to the successful completion of the mission. Specialist Nye's devotion to duty and high degree of professionalism were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military Service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
