    Barnes served 22 years in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Aviator and flew over 35 combat missions during World War II. He was very proud of his flying record. He was one of the TBM pilots with the USS Cabot air group that participated in the sinking of the Yamato, the Imperial Japanese battleship on 6 April 1945.
