    Howard Auten enlisted in the US Navy in August 1942 and served on active duty from December 1942 to January 1948 ashore and afloat. He served nine months with the Naval Construction Battalions (Seabees).

    He participated in the Navy V-12 program in preparation for a commission as a supply officer. He served on the staff of the Commander Service Forces, Pacific, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, and as supply officer on the LST 1102 (spare parts issue vessel) based at Tsingtao, China, and participated in the decommissioning of the ship at San Diego Naval Base before returning to inactive duty.

    He served with various Naval Reserve units until retiring in 1982 as a lieutenant commander.

    He qualified for a single engine land license while employed by Goodyear Aircraft Corporation (GAC), Akron, Ohio, and while with GAC, administered the electronics contract for the ZPG3W, the largest non-rigid airship built to that time (1955-56). He participated in building two homebuilt experimental planes.
