    As an enlisted member of the U. S. Coast Guard, Mr. Whittum flew in the UF-2G Grumman Albatross during a 1960 - 1962 Alaskan assignment. Later, as a commissioned officer, he was Combat Information Center Officer in the Coast Guard Cutter SHERMAN (WHEC-720); and Operations Officer and Helicopter Control Officer in the Coast Guard Cutter GALLATIN (WHEC-721).
    During his civilian careen he provided field engineering support to remotely controlled airborne reconnaissance operations for almost sixteen years (1983 - 1999) during flight testing and operational deployments. His field assignments took him to Lockheed (Skunk Works), Palmdale, CA; Beale Air Force Base, CA; Korea, England and Germany. He was assigned to the 1704th Provisional Reconnaissance Squadron, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations.
    Currently retired, he maintains interest in space exploration and is active in the Einstein@home project.
