Leland Auger was born in Sebastopol, CA on December 23, 1929, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August 1948 at Los Angeles. He attended aviation radio school at the Naval Air Technical Training Center (NAATC), Memphis, TN, and was assigned to Navy transport squadron, VR-24, at Port Lyautey, Morocco and London England. Later he served with VC-4, an all-weather squadron home ported at Atlantic City, NJ, and aboard the aircraft carriers Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42), Oriskany (CV-34), and Saipan (CVE-48). He reached the rate of aviation radioman third class (AL3C) in August 1950, and was discharged honorably in July 1952 at Philadelphia, PA.
