For five decades, Lee Johnson combined his passion for aviation with his unique entrepreneurial talents in furthering the computing and aviation industries. Starting in the 1950's, he pioneered in applying emerging computer and communications technology to innovative commercial aviation projects in both the public and private sectors. Among his many endeavors, he designed and implemented the first airline reservation system installed in the U.S. and overseas—the precursor to the systems now used worldwide. He developed the first Air Traffic Control System providing controllers for the first time "real-time" access to flight data. During the 1960's, Johnson played an important role in the NASA space program with the installation and successful operation of over forty computer systems for the Gemini and Apollo space programs. For over two decades he also provided highly modified aircraft to the Federal government for special-mission and scientific research projects. Johnson, who has been a private pilot for over fifty years, holds jet multi-engine ratings and is recognized today as an official computer pioneer.
