Les took his first flying lesson at age 10. He soloed at 17 in a Piper Cherokee 140 but did not get his license until he was 32. Subsequently, he earned his single-engine instrument and later multi-engine instrument rating. While Les flew Secretary of State, then Governor, now U.S. Senator Evan Boyh, he also flew another U.S. Senator, a candidate for, now member of Congress and another Governor.
