After World War I, purchased nine surplus seaplanes from US Navy and formed Biscayne Aero Corporation, a charter company in south Florida.
In 1929 was employed by Pan American Airways as a pilot, flying in South America. He made the first survey flight down the east coast of South America. In 1933 he was promoted to management and served assignments in South America, West Africa, and Portugal.
