Lt. Downey gave his life for his country and freedom over Hamelin, Germany on February 22, 1944. He was a B-17 pilot as a member of the 535th Squadron of the 381st Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force of the U.S. Army Air Force. He was on his eighth mission at the time.
