    Aubrey John Fletcher was born in Jamestown, ND on January 29, 1909. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt, Coast Artillery Corps, Reserve in 1933. He was later assigned to an Anti-Aircraft Unit and on July 1941 was called to active duty with the US Army Signal corps. On October 1, he was assigned to the Aircraft Warning and Control (AWAC), Operations Section, US Army Air Corps (later US Air Force). Until the end of the war Lt. Col. Fletcher was head of the section responsible for plans, coordinating development, requirements and operation of long and short range radar, air/ ground radio communication and identification friend or foe (IFF), for the Pacific Theater. His section coordinated the concept of aircraft detection and control of aircraft, which was later developed into civilian aircraft control. Lt. Col. Fletcher returned to USAF Active reserve in January, 1946 and later was awarded the Legion of Merit
