    Chuck joined the Air Force in 1942 and became a P-51 Pilot. He was sent to England in 1943 and joined the 336th Squadron (Fighting Eagles) of the 8th Air Force. He was frustrated that the fighters could not take the bombers the whole way to some targets, but the “wing tanks” solved that problem.
    He flew “top cover” for the invasion of Normandy. Also flew the 1st shuttle mission “to Russia, on to Italy and back to Debden. Thy wee to be sent home after their first tour of duty, but due to so many losses and don’t enough replacements he was in the middle of his third tour when he returned.
