Ms. Cindy R. Weiner
Our dad, Lt. Col. M. M. Weiner, USAF Reserve Retired, was born in 1918in Rochester, N.Y. to parents who emigrated from what is now Ukraine about 13 years before he was born. They spoke no English, but, like so many who came into the waiting arms of America, they were proud of their country and pleased to be Americans. Dad was the youngest child of five, In 1939, he ventured to the New York World?€™s Fair (a 10-hour train trip) and flew in an airplane for the first time at the Fair. That was it - love at first flight. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and spent 18 months in the Armored Infantry in Ft. Knox, KY He took the exam for the Army Air Corps, passed and was sent home on furlough before being sent to Ballinger, Texas for primary pilot training , then Waco, Childress and finally graduating class of 43B in Lubbock Texas .He did so well that he was one of the youngest officers in the AAC when he got his wings. He went on to be a trainer of pilots and because his teaching skills were so strong, he never was sent overseas. He said he had papers to go to the Solomon Islands, and was scheduled to go just days before the War ended. After the War he came home to his wife and baby daughter; two more daughters followed as did a successful kitchen business which he started and ran for more than 30 years while simultaneously flying with the Air Force Reserve. To this day Col. Weiner is an avid promoter of the Air Force, recruiting as many young people as will listen to his enthusiastic endorsement of life in the U.S.Military Services. We are proud to be part of an Air Force family and prouder still to call Mike Weiner our dad.
