    Served as Naval Aircrewman in the Pacific during World War II. Trained as flight engineer on PBY and PBM patrol planes. Initially served as a turret gunner in TBF/TBM Avenger torpedo planes flying off the light carrier USS Cabot. Was shot down bombing shipping off the island of Palau in March-April 1944.

    Following his rescue at sea, he switched to serving as flight engineer on PBM Mariner patrol planes prior to the Battle of Saipan. Finished service in the Pacific flying air rescue missions for B-29 raids against Japan.

    Commissioned in the USAF through the Air Force ROTC program at Ohio State University. Recalled to active duty during the Korean War. Served as an Air Force Intelligence Officer for more than twenty years. Participated in early Air Force Special Operations. Master Parachutist with over 300 military static line parachute jumps.
