    Honored by:
    J. Patterson Rogers

    1st Lieutenant/Operations Officer – 858 Bomber Squadron, 492 Bomb Group (H), 8th Army Air Force (AAF) – Killed in Action – May 19, 1944, Hanover, Germany.
The 492nd BG (H) is the only Air Force unit or group to have been dissolved because of losses. On three separate dates, May 19, 1944 being the first, the 492nd lost more planes than any other 8th AAF unit, including one date in which an entire squadron was lost to enemy action. The 492nd BG (H) was in combat from April to August 7, 1944 and suffered one of the highest losses of any Army Air Forces unit. Although not as famous as other units such as the “Bloody 100th”, the 492nd should be remembered as an example of the cost of war.
