Lt. Ziler joined the Army Air Corps in 1934 having flown first at age 17. On a maneuver in 1937 his plane crashed due to engine failure on take-off. After extensive hospitalization (5 years) he continued to fly once discharged. Later he flew sail plane and held a record of flight and return in a two passenger glider.
