Lt. Joseph P. Loughnane, of Boston, MA, is the son of Irish immigrants. He entered WWII in 1943, flying reconnaissance missions for the U.S. Army Air Force as a Radar Navigator on B-29 aircraft. Based in Okinawa, he flew missions over both Japan and China, some missions lasting as long as 14 hours. On these missions, in addition to his navigational duties, Lt. Loughnane assisted in conducting radar photoreconnaissance. During one memorable mission in 1945 Lt. Loughnane participated on a photoreconnaissance mission as his B-29 flew over Hiroshima, Japan, shortly after the atomic bomb was dropped. For his service Lt. Loughnane was awarded six medals. In 1952, during the Korean conflict, Lt. Loughnane was activated by the reserves and served as a radar observer on B-29 missions over North Korea. From the same airbase in Okinawa he participated in more than 25 direct bombing missions. He married Eileen McCarthy in 1944 and during a 60-year marriage they raised a family of 5 children and 11 grandchildren. In his non-military career he worked in the energy industry in his native Boston, and was very actively involved in the development of nuclear power plants and energy conservation. The children of Joseph Loughnane dedicate this place on the Wall of Honor to our father with deep appreciation, affection, and deserved recognition for his service to our country and especially for his care of our family.
