Lt. Strauss was a navigator on a B-17 bomber of the US Army Air Corps during World War II (WWII). Upon completing his 24 missions over Europe he volunteered to go on a B-17 bomber (not his regular one) with a totally new crew who needed a veteran navigator for the lead plane on the flight. Upon completion of this 25th mission (his last) he was contemplating returning to the states for fighter pilot training.. His B-17 was shot down by German aircraft over the North Sea while returning from that mission. There were no survivors.
