    Robert Delvar Pope joined the Navy on February 16th, 1942. He trained at Provo Airport in Provo, Utah in a civil pilot program and received his pilot’s license in July of 1942. Upon reporting for active duty he trained as an aviation cadet in October of 1942 at St. Mary’s College in California. Late in 1942 and early in 1943 he was assigned to duty in the Aeronautic Organization at Moffett Field in California. He was commissioned as an Ensign First Class on May 3, 1943 at Blimp Training School, Moffett Field. He was assigned to Airship Squadron 32 at Moffett Field under the direction of Commanding Officers Robert E. Huse and R.E. Bly. During the remainder of World War II, he piloted “K” airships along the west coast of the U.S. in anti-submarine operations. They also assisted local fisherman locate schools of fish.
    He was appointed to the rank of Lieutenant (Jr. grade) on July 1, 1944. In 1945, he transferred to Naval Air Navigation School in Shawnee, Oklahoma on January 6th. Transferred to reserves in 1945. He was made Lieutenant June 22, 1949 and retired on July 1, 1963.
    He has five daughters.
