    Samuel Arthur Phelps, Jr. was born May 24, 1924 and entered the U.S. Navy Aviation Cadet Program (Navy V-5 program) on March 3, 1943. During the training he flew the Piper Cub Aircraft, the N2S Stearman, the SNV Voltee and the SNJ Texan. He completed the Navy Flight Officer Training Program on August 15, 1944, graduating at N.S.A. Pensacola, Florida, received his Naval Aviator “Wings of Gold” and commissioned as a U.S. Navy Ensign, Certificate #406829.
    Samuel A. Phelps, Jr., as a Navy Torpedo Squadron Pilot, flew the Navy Torpedo Bomber TBM / TBF Avenger. He was promoted to Lieutenant with a Navy Fighter Aircraft Squadron where he flew Navy F6F Hellcat Fighter Aircraft. As the pilot of a TBM / TBF Avenger, he made many take-offs and landings from the Navy Aircraft Carriers, the USS Sable and the USS Randolph in the Atlantic Ocean.
    He served on activity duty in WWII and the Korean War, and is Navy Retired Reserve.
