    Missouri born, Ernie Dryer learned to fly in the 1930’s in Iowa. He often buzzed his mother’s house in Osceola to let her know he was in town. When war came, Ernie was first a contract flight instructor in the Army Air Corp, then received a commission and continued to teach primary flying in BT-13s in in Texas. Ernie and his student were killed in a crash in March 1945, during a cross-country trip. He is buried in Highlands Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa. His only son, David, is a retired United Airlines Captain.
