Born in 1928 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Died in 2000 in Batesville, AR. Buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

His military career spanned more than 27 years and included over 8 years of enlisted service. He earned his pilot's wings in 1955 and logged over 9,000 flying hours in over a dozen different types of aircraft ranging from jet fighters to the C-5.

During a combat tour in Vietnam and Thailand he flew over 550 missions as a forward air controller (FAC) in an O-1 Bird Dog. He finished his combat tour with over 900 combat flying hours.

Witterman served over 10 years as a flying safety officer. His military decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with 22 oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
