Carl (Johnny) Sollien served as a twenty-four year old B-24 Pilot in the 445th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force during World War II. Johnny and his crew flew 19 missions over Germany and France before being shot down by enemy fighters during the Kassel raid on 27 September 1944*.
Those of the crew who survived by parachuting were taken prisoners and interned for the duration. Johnny was taken to Stalag Luft I. A few months later advancing Russian troops liberated the camp.

John remained in the Air Force Reserve and went active in 1951, rising to his retirement rank of LtCol.
