First Lieutenant Gary A. Campbell distinguished himself by exceptional heroism while serving as an AH-1G aircraft commander in aerial flight near Dong Ha, Republic of Vietnam on April Third 1972. On that date, Lieutenant Campbell voluntarily flew into a highly hostile and heavily defended area to effect the rescue of an overrun Military Advisory Group. With his aircraft severely damaged and his co-pilot wounded Lieutenant Campbell continued to provide close air support allowing for the rescue of Military Advisory Group. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Campbell reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
