    who during 1944-45 completed 101 P-47 air combat missions over Germany in tactical support of the advancing US First and Third Armies, including the Battle of the Bulge. Early in 1944, served as OPS Officer, Iceland Base Command during transition of P-40s to P-47s, leading to his combat assignment. 1943 graduate of Command and General Staff School, Ft. Leavenworth, and US Army Air Force staff course prior to Iceland tour. In 1942, served as instructor pilot of B-24s, Smyrna, TN, after assignment as Base OPS Officer, Jackson, MI where Netherland pilots were being trained for combat. In June 1941, volunteered for one year inactive AC status to participate, as a Pan American Airways-Africa employee, to establish routes and fly combat aircraft from West Africa to North Egypt to provide aerial reinforcements of the RAF, allowing the British Army to fight in the battle for North Africa against the advancing Germany Army, commanded by General Rommel. He graduated from Kelly Army Air Field on May 10, 1940 with a commission as 2LT and his pilot wings. After graduation, he was engaged in pre-war air transport of war materiel among US bases and to Panama. Resigned from USAAC in 1945, having been awarded his senior pilot's wing.
