Lt Col. Whitaker served 29 years on active duty with the Army Air Corps and the United States Air Force. He flew P-51 Mustangs in the 15th AF ending in a German P.O.W. camp.
During the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he served in various operational assignments.
Retired in 1975, he was the recipient of the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medals, P.O.W. Medal and numerous other awards and decorations.
