    Dale Burgess from Mt. Pleasant, Michigan entered the Aviation Cadet Program of the Army Air Forces in May 1942. He graduated from Williams Field, Arizona on October 1, 1943, and was commissioned a second lieutenant. After more training in California he was assigned to the 475th Fighter Group in the Southwest Pacific Area.

    He flew over 100 missions in the P-38 Lightening, flying from New Guinea to the Philippines and Formosa. He received the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and several theater ribbons. He stayed in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and reached the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring.
