    Dad joined the Army Air Forces in 1942. After cadet school, he went to B-24 school at Liberal, KS. When he finished his training in B-24s, he was asked to stay on as an instructor pilot for the B-24s, and he did. He remained an instructor on the B-24 during World War II.

    After WW II, Dad was in radio and communications. In 1954, he joined the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and was sent to B-47 school, then on to Altus AFB, OK, as an aircraft commander on the B-47. In 1957 Dad and his crew were selected to go to B-52 school at Castle AFB, Merced, CA. Upon completion of their training his crew was sent to Ellsworth AFB, Rapid City, SD. In 1960 Dad's wing was sent to Amarillo AFB, Amarillo, TX. He finally retired in 1965, working in the SAC war plans office.

    In the 23 years dad was in the Air Force, he flew the following aircraft:

    T-6, AT-7, AT-10, AT-11, PT-19, BT-13, C-45, C-46, C-47, B-24, B-47, and the B-52.

    He had almost 6000 hrs in the cockpit and held ratings as Bombardier, Radar Navigator, and finally Command Pilot. He also held instructor pilot ratings in over half the planes he flew.
