Having helped build B-17 Flying Fortresses at the beginning of World War II, I enlisted in the Army Air Forces as a cadet. I graduated as a second lieutenant, and flew in B-17s and B-24 Liberators as a navigator. When the B-29 Superfortress was delivered they needed commissioned flight engineers. I then flew both as an engineer and navigator. During Korea I again flew as a B-29 navigator on 27 combat missions.
My total service on active and reserve duty was 29 1/2 years.
