First solo flight was on August 18, 1952 in a T-6G Texan from Stallings Air Force Base, Kinston, North Carolina.
In May 1968 Col. Burrus, a native of Columbus Georgia, was commander of the C-141 Starlifter which brought Apollo 10 astronauts Thomas P. Stafford, John W. Young and Eugene A. Cernan from the south sea island of Pango Pango 6,000 miles non-stop to their home in Houston, Texas.
