    Harold Butler, Jr. was born in 1928 in Coronado, California, and graduated from high school there. He enlisted in the Army Air Forces in 1946. He later joined the Air Force Reserve at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and graduated from Weber Junior College in 1950. He transferred to Cornell University and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, serving as cadet commander. Commissioned on graduation in 1954, he joined the Air Force Reserve and served as commander of several Northern California units until retiring in 1988.

    He was a bank officer from 1954 to 1986. He has been a member of the Reserve Officers Association, including chapter president three times.
