    James Ashmore joined the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942 and completed glider pilot training in January 1943, followed by pilot training in February 1944, and seaplane training with the U.S. Navy in May 1944. He was one of the original Army Air Corps pilots to start what is now called the Air Rescue Service. He served with the 3rd Emergency Rescue Squadron in the South Pacific in World War II. He was released from active duty in February 1946.

    In 1949 he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and in 1951 he was recalled to active duty with the U.S. Air Force. He served as a flight instructor in T-33 jets from 1951 to 1954. Next he completed gunnery school at Nellis Air Force Base and served with the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing in the Pacific from 1954 to 1955. From 1956 to 1959 he served with the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Command, then at the Air University Command from 1959 to 1963 as chief of instrument standardization.

    His next assignment took him to Torrejon Air Base in Spain (1963-1965), then to Butler University, Indianapolis, IN from 1965 to 1969 where he was professor of aerospace studies. He retired from active duty as a lieutenant colonel in 1969.
