    Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Steinmiller graduated from Virginia Tech and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1984. He retired in 2006.
    After an initial tour of duty as a communications project manager, he served aboard Strategic Air Command's Airborne Command Post (Looking Glass). He then cross-trained into space operations, attending Undergraduate Space Training at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. He served his first space tour as a Missile Warning Crew Commander on the Canadian border at Cavalier Air Station, North Dakota. Next, he served two tours at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado conducting missile warning operations training and as a staff officer in Headquarters United Space Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). During this time, he worked in both the headquarters and in the Cheyenne Mountain complex as a member of the Crisis Action Team. After attending Air Command and Staff College, he was assigned to U.S. Joint Forces Command’s Deployable Training Team, providing joint warfighting expertise to Combatant Commanders and Joint Task Force Commanders worldwide. Following that, he was Chief of the Integration Division responsible for developing a new airborne command and control platform. In his final position, he was the deputy, then acting Chief of the Concepts and Analysis Division of the National Security Space Office in the Pentagon.
