Beginning with an early love of airplanes, Lewis S. Clement has spent his whole life, both personally and professionally, engaged in some aspect of aviation and flying. His 31-year career in the US Air Force began in January 1944 when he was sworn into the Army Air Forces. Commissioned early in 1946, he was then assigned overseas with the 306th and 305th Bomb Groups as part of Project Casey Jones, serving as a B-17 Navigator. He also served as a B-29 Bombardier with the 28th Bomb Group in Rapid City. For the next five years, he received Gunnery Officer, Pilot and Aerial Photo Officer training. Assigned to the 67th Tac Recon Wing in Kimpo, South Korea, and then at numerous US Air Bases, he spent 13 years as Photo Officer and Photo Squadron Commander. In June 1965, he was assigned to the Pentagon as Staff Photo Officer. He also served as Squadron Commander at the 600th Photo Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam, from June 1969 to July 1970. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in January 1975.
For 11 years after his retirement from the USAF, he continued to support the DOD by leading a management study on the consolidation and standardization of service-wide audiovisual resources. He also served as Chief of the Audiovisual Policy Office with the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) before he retired.
Since retirement, Mr. Clement has continued to pursue his avid love of flying by building and flying several ultralight and experimental aircraft. He currently is involved with Club One and Club Six of the United States Ultralight Association. He also served as the USUA Mid-Atlantic Regional Representative for several years. He received the 2002 USUA Regional Representative of the Year award, which recognizes personal dedication and service to USUA and American ultralight aviation. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the USUA from 2003-2005.
For these outstanding contributions to aviation, we would like to recognize our father Lewis S. Clement.
