    General Stillwell’s Hq. in India. In 1942, Lt. Martin, an AF photo reconnaissance pilot in a single seated aircraft, was flying in Burma photographing enemy installations. He was shot down. His chute hit a tree leaving him hanging upside down. He fired his pistol. Tribesmen heard the shots. They took him down, 25 feet. With their help, he made his way to safety. He was awarded three medals including the AF Medal for meritorious achievement, coolness, and courage.
