Enlisted in the US Army Corps Dec '39. Photo school at Lowry Field, CO July 1940. Arrived in Hawaii Nov '40. Asgd. to Wheeler Field. Transferred to Hickham Field in Mar '41. Air crew as photo-gunner on B-18 and B-17D acft. Learned to fly at John Rogers airport, Honolulu. Flew numerous patrols in B-17Es after Dec 7th attack. returned to U.S. as a Corporal, end of Feb '42 for pilot training as Aviation Student (enlisted pilot trainee). Completed primary flying school at Hemet, CA n PT-22s. Started Basic flying school iat Minter Field, Bakersfield, CA in Bt-13s but transferred to glider program at Ft. Morgan, CO and 29 Palms, CA, finishing in July '42 as a S/Sgt Glider pilot. To Lubbock, TX for CG-4 gliders but transferred to Aviation Cadet program and re-entered power flying at GOodfellow, TX in Class 43-T, P-51 RTU at Bartow, FL and overseas to England to 4th Ftr Gp, 334th Ftr Squad in march 1944. Flew 12 missions before crash-landing in France on may 9, '44. Evanded with help of the French until captured Jun 23. Guest of the Gestapo in various civil prisons in France and Germany until Sep '44. Sent to Stalag Luft I throught Dulag Luft. Liberated by Societs in May '45. Returned to US. Assigned to Luke Field, Phoenix as instructor pilot. Transferred to Lowry and Buckley Fields, Denver. Relieved from active duty in July '46 and enlisted as M/SGt in Aug '46. Assigned to March Field, Riverside, CA. Recalled to active duty in march '47. Assigned to Selfridge AFB, MI. Verious adminstrative positions until selected to go to Korea in July, '50. Departed July 12, '50 on board USS Boxer.
