Allen Peter Tonsfeldt served in World War II as a naval aviator from 1942 to 1945. The farm boy from Minnesota thought bombers and cargo would be "boring" so he became a fighter pilot. He flew F6F Hellcats off carriers in the Pacific theater, his primary carrier being the second Hornet. Awarded the Distinguished Fly Cross, he put his life on the line so others wouldn't have to suffer under tyranny. At the end of hostilities he abandoned flying, associating it with the horrors of war. He then returned to his farming roots to provide food to a hungry world. Many people owe a lot to the Allen Tonsfeldts of America.
