My father, Sylvan G. Payne (Syd) flew Helldivers (SB2C) in combat in the Pacific in WWII. He wasa member of VB-85 and Airgroup 85. His time in the Pacific included take-offs and landings on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La during the time that Admiral McCain was aboard.
Syd remained in the reserves through the Korean Conflict, flying various aircraft out of Columbus, Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky.
