Charles I. (Charlie) Stanton, Jr., was born into a flying family with his father being one of the first U.S. Army air mail pilots and also a CAA Administrator in the 1940s. He began his flying career in 1943 as a U.S. Marine Corps flying instructor in Corpus Christi, Texas, followed by a tour of duty in the Pacific theater flying transports. Jobs following active military duty included survey crew duties, private airline pilot duties for TACA de Honduras in the 1950s, attendance at Southern Methodist University through graduation, followed by employment for both Lockheed and General Dynamics in California. From there he became involved in the aerospace sector with employment at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he devoted the rest of his career to the Manned Space Flight program and Space Shuttle program.
Concurrent with his NASA work, Charlie flew Part 135 Air Taxi as PIC, flying Aero-Commander, Beach, Cessna and Piper aircraft in IFR passenger/cargo operations. After retirement, he did advising, consulting, and flight instruction for Armel Aviation, Ltd., based at Dulles Airport. Then, a move to Florida in the late 1980s enabled him to become Assistant Professor of Flight Training and Head of the Flight Training Department at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, for several years.
Charlie is a long-time member of the Order of Daedalians, QB's, OX5, Silver Wings and Air Mail Pioneers, and is still active in all of these flying organizations.
